I haven't looked into the Drive Wiper option too much but here is how I see it: Erasers write a certain character to each byte of free space unallocated space on each pass. An 18 year career as a programmer at Microsoft soon followed. When the flag is up, it is in use, and cannot be used to write new data. Files not deleted If it does give you the same result that CCleaner did, I'm going to stick with my original assertion that the files that Recuva is recovering for you weren't really deleted in the first place. If you are stuck on Windows, "sdelete" is the equivalent: You can have CCleaner delete files securely, effectively using the Drive Cleaner tool on each file it deletes. In this excerpt from Answercast 32I look at cleaning up free space with CCleaner and how Recycle Bins work on hard drives. Think of each sector as a mailbox with a flag on it. NOT the Drive Wipe function.
You can exclude an entire drive, folder, file, or registry key. Sorry if this is not the right subreddit. Again, I'm sorry if this is not the right place for this, but its one of the biggest PC-related subs with many active users. NOT the Drive Wipe function.
Issue resolved, they did not test their software against a full Free Space Drive Wipe -- will keep this thread up for discussion purposes though. Are there any more powerful tools than CCleaner? No I dont need to destroy my harddisk -- theres always thermite lol -- but Im very weary about my privacy.
I generally clean my pc every week with this tool, but Im now feeling a little miffed that some software can easily counter my efforts. Accessing deleted data is easy even with freeware tools, forensic level recovery may be possible even on overwritten sectors but I doubt it'll be very effective.
Essentially if something is overwritten the only way you could tell what was there before would be looking at other sections of the disc which may have records of the file, it scanning the disc platter with high quality lasers and maybe microscopic cameras.
Even then they'll only really find files which were there a long time It's hard to know exactly what can be done, but I doubt of the validity of any software which claims it can recover files which have been deleted and the stored sections have been overwritten even once.
Do you have any suggestions as to what can also be used to truly secure my PC from having old data recovered? As far as I was ever aware, CCleaner is only really for easily deleting things, I'm not sure it does anything else.
Personally, after deleting stuff I'd do a defragment, which would likely move files into the sectors you deleted from, perhaps there's software which will write over free space but it'll have to be done outside of windows and you'll run the risk of damaging the HDD if done to often.
To confirm what files are still accessible I suggest you download and play with some undelete software which will give you an idea of what goes on, I haven't used one in a while but I think I remember using undelete pro.
Ccleaner has a "Drive Wiper" option that formats and overwrites with 0's. It has 1, 3, or 7 passes I think there's a custom one too. Actually works quite well too. Zeroing out a Drive is exactly what I do upon re-installation for anyone, 3-pass is fine, 7-pass is good, switch to Symantec and do a pass write if you're super paranoid: When simply deleting files, all you're doing is removing the entry from the file allocation table.
The physical data is still existing in the magnetic bits. Undelete software works by scanning those bits and reconstructing the files from that, without file names as they existed only in the FAT. If you write over the bits, say "zeroing" them.
The hard drive configures those magnetic bits into the 0 position For software to read those 0's and get 1's out of them seems impossible to me. It'll be very expensive, difficult and in my opinion, impossible to recover what it was before, even with high tech lasers and cameras.
The 'clear free space' option in ccleaner takes a long time because it actually overwrites the old data that was marked as empty. It effectively zeros whatever parts of the drive aren't being used by data. It takes a long, long ass time, and also frees up some mft space that may have been used.
DBAN will wipe the full drive. It gives several options, wiping it up to 14 times. CCleaner apparently only wipes the unallocated space on a hard drive. To your update, they did test it against a free space drive wipe: CCleaner doesn't claim to protect you in this case.
According to the article they pulled most of the information out of the pagefile, which ccleaner doesn't touch because it increases reboot time and ccleaner is optimization software. They don't want to tankify your lappy.
You could dump the pagefile on shutdown, if you wanted: CCleaner is for protecting your privacy on the internet, the software you linked to is for people who have physical access to your machine. If someone has your laptop, you are proper well fucked and no cookie cleaning software will save you.
Full-disk encryption is what you'd want to have in that case. TrueCrypt is a popular one. While thermite is admittedly more fun, dban is another option http: Windows Bitlocker is probably fine as well if your Windows version supports it.
In general encryption is a great option since it doesn't rely on deletion to protect your data. If it is recovered from deletion they only recover encrypted data. I actually addressed this in the update. If you look closely, youll see they are still using only the cleaner function.
They havent used a Wipe Free Space function. A one-pass wipe that only sets the bits to zero will be insufficient. Manning wiped her MacBook with one-pass-zeroes and reinstalled the OS, and the authorities were still able to pull data from the drive.
Multiple passes of random data will be practically impossible to recover. CCleaner with multiple random passes will securely erase your free space. NB that doing this all the time will be hard on your drive; e. May be better to use a utility that just shreds the recycle bin.
Once it is overwritten regardless of the pattern there simply isn't usable previous data to be restored. There is no "depth" and no "history" to be recovered, there is no "half charged" or "half magnetic" state.
If hardware was able to "read history" out of the storage you would be facing regular corruption of your file system because it would accidently happen all the time. Data is written in bytes in hexadecimal characters and your talking bits.
Expensive and sophisticated analysis of removed disk can recover erased data using edges of write track where weak image remains unless erased about 7 times. Thus my joking reference to the Feds that recommend repeated wipes for security of secret information.
How can you store 1 Byte of data on a storage device that only has two states? Each tiny storage unit is an oriented magnetic field "north-south" or "south-north" which represent the bits "1" and "0".
If there are four "north-south" fields in a row it would result in the bits "" being read which is the binary code for "F" hex. The reason for more sophisticated methods for government data comes from stuff like bad blocks or HPAs which are not accessed by software or even failures as simple as someone unplugging a disk before the process was finished.
That is, for ATA disk drives manufactured after over 15 GB clearing by overwriting the media once is adequate to protect the media from both keyboard and laboratory attack. Well, yes, it is the same.
The question is, why would you want to do that? Even with just 1 pass, not even a paid professional would be able to get anything back. Also, wiping a hard drive can be a very long process it depends on the drive size My recommendation: If you want to read more about this, check this article: Wipe Free Space - Multi-Pass?
A 7-pass erasure using random data will do a pretty complete job to prevent reconstruction of the data on the drive. Gutmann himself has responded to some of these criticisms and also criticized how his algorithm has been abused in an epilogue to his original paper, in which he states [1]:.
In the time since this paper was published, some people have treated the pass overwrite technique described in it more as a kind of voodoo incantation to banish evil spirits than the result of a technical analysis of drive encoding techniques.
If you're using a drive which uses encoding technology X, you only need to perform the passes specific to X, and you never need to perform all 35 passes.

NB that doing this all the time will be hard on your drive; e. May be better to use a utility that just shreds the recycle bin. Also note that if you use an SSD, wiping free space is hard on the drive, as you will be wearing down the cells with all those passes.
Additionally, SSDs may cache some data and cause it to survive beyond a partial wipe. Full-disk encryption is an option you may want to explore. Hardware-based is fast but you can reasonably assume it's all backdoored.
Software-based, such as LUKS, will slow the drive down, but it's open-source, so any shenanigans are in plain view. If you ever go over to Linux - and you should probably consider it if you're dealing with security and sensitive info - the 'shred' utility will overwrite files multiple times with random data instead of just marking them as free space.
If you are stuck on Windows, "sdelete" is the equivalent: Okay, first thing is that the actual physical layout of the drive is going to be different from what software sees. There are redundancies and caches built in to improve performance and things that a program like CCleaner is just not going to see.
So how 'wary' are you? If you're very paranoid then you might have to destroy the drive or at least place it in an extremely strong magnetic field. If you are just wanting to be fairly safe then I would suggest getting the tool for your drive, example Seagate drives you can get Seagate Tools or Western Digital has their own tool.
I think they all have tools for their own products and these come with a wipe utility designed for that drive. In addition, you can usually set the number of runs you want to perform. I wouldn't depend on a utility like CCleaner as good as it is for cleaning the registry and other stuff to reliably wipe my drives.
Ive been reading the comments and all seem to be describing how OP's post applies to conventional HDDs. What about a SSD? To tell you the truth, I've never been able to recover anything after 3. I have gotten sporadic files off of one pass, but deep down, that's really no different than a reformat of a disk.
But I'm not the most advanced forensic expert either, and someone with more experience might be able to pull something. Test Disk for Linux http: Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy.

Can files be put into the Recycle Bin in a standalone hard disk and then format the hard disk?
Thanks for any help that you can provide. In this excerpt from Answercast 32 , I look at cleaning up free space with CCleaner and how Recycle Bins work on hard drives. What I'm concerned about is that, perhaps, the files you're seeing come back when you run Recuva weren't really deleted:.
So make sure that you've also run CCleaner's Clean - which goes out and deletes all of these other files first, before you run its wiping utility. If, for whatever reason, you can't get CCleaner's wipe to work, there is another utility called SDelete.
There is an article on my site about Secure Deletion. SDelete is a command line tool that will effectively do the same thing. It has options to tell it to wipe the free space on the hard drive.
It will override all of the free space on the hard drive — any number of times again I'll say one or two is plenty. If it does give you the same result that CCleaner did, I'm going to stick with my original assertion that the files that Recuva is recovering for you weren't really deleted in the first place.
There are several reasons for this. Ultimately if theoretically you were able to have a Recycle Bin on a separate drive, deleting a file would actually be copying it from the original file to the Recycle Bin drive.
That just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Not only would it be slow, but the original file would still be kind of recoverable on the original drive. That just doesn't make sense. What you find is that each Recycle Bin, on each drive, is simply a place where the system can move the directory entry for the file without having to copy it when you delete it.
So that's not gonna be an approach. But I really do think that CCleaner should be working properly for you. If it doesn't SDelete's a good alternative.
